A Critical Need (Part 1)

This is a clip from the Dilbert cartoon series that had something very important to say and in fact it was done with such shocking clarity that I had to post on it. In this clip Dilbert, a proponent of evolutionary ideas, is called out after claiming that he believes only "science", "facts", and "proof". Dogbert (the little dog) stops him and reminds him that in reality he only assumes what he hears is true. Implying then that his general revelations and certainties are bordering on pointless. In truth Dilbert is doing what most do, choosing what information is acceptable as information comes; filtering out what he will and will not believe while verifying neither for himself. He is applying his presuppositions and his faith which for him are founded in secular science.

Dilbert: "Personally I require scientific evidence before I believe anything"
Dogbert: "No you don't."
Dilbert: "Yes I do!"
Dogbert: "No you only think you do, but in fact you rely on media reports that scientific evidence exists. You don't actually see the evidence yourself."
Dilbert: "I don't have time to read all the scientific studies myself."
Dogbert: "So you're not gullible your just busy..."

This isn't a challenge to evolution or the scientific method. This actually reinforces what many scientific minded people have been saying all along. Indeed, not only can one just look up the research, in many cases, they can reproduce the results themselves. Most of the evidence for evolution is available for anyone to test themselves. Like Dilbert, most people indeed only listen to authority figures. Many of us don't know how, don't care or are too lazy to question what we are fed. However, some authority makes more sense than others. I doubt seriously that scientists are lying about endogenous retroviruses, the vitamin C broken gene and global dimming. If I have reason to doubt I will. Creationists give me far more to doubt that what the scientific data reveals. This clip supports critical thinking. No one was there to see Jesus or God making the world either.. yet you believe.. yet you don't question your own beliefs with the same energy and dedication. Science doesn't support Adam and Eve.. sorry buddy.

Hello again Reg,

No, this isn't a challenge to the scientific method, but it is a challenge to evolution. If you like, we might discuss the connection that evolutionary belief has to religion. We might discuss the many complete failures of evolution between science and logic. However, if not between us perhaps you can (as you said) research it yourself on sites like answers in genesis.

Agreed, like Dilbert most people do only listened to perceived authority figures. In general people are apathetic and submissive about this topic. Your point on how some authority makes more sense than others is a beautiful statement. Whose authority is greater than the creator, God almighty? (^_^)

What would qualify to you as reason to doubt Reg? Reason to doubt is not utter certainty; even a single rational thought can be reason to doubt an idea. This is actually one of a few reasons I have such confidence in Christ. I have yet to see one rationally or logically sound thought which puts God in dispute. Years on your forums and many others have not managed to provide such a thing and so I stand affirmed in faith. So what would qualify for you and would you really consider it if it did shake you? You say that creationists give you reason to doubt, but you don't attempt to say why. Entitled to your opinion, but more information would help; perhaps I can clear up some of the mess you see in it.

You seem confident in making assertions about scripture and my personal critical thinking skills, but you might have benefited checking with me before making those assertions. For starters, as I recently addressed in your comments on youtube, many people saw Jesus whether healing or preaching or walking on water. In fact, the bible is made up of eye-witness accounts. Please see that youtube reply for more information on that. In regards to questioning my beliefs, you might be surprised how often I test (and am tested by others) concerning what and why I believe. I have obviously found reason for this belief and would be happy to share that reason. Feel free to test my beliefs for yourself, but try not to feel so certain when making assumptions of another person.

As for science, it is only on the basis of the biblical creator that we can have logic, science, natural law, and any sense of uniformity in nature. This is a topic we might consider talking about. In reality observable science lines up and verifies Gods existence.

Your Servant in Christ,
-Dan
